Lamay to Pisac Hike – Sacred Valley of the Incas
This full-day hiking experience connects the village of Lamay with the archaeological and cultural hub of Pisac, following ancient routes through the highlands of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This hike offers a perfect balance between nature, archaeology, and living Andean culture, ideal for travelers seeking an authentic and non-touristic experience.
The Lamay to Pisac hike crosses diverse ecosystems, remote communities, and panoramic viewpoints, revealing a lesser-known side of the Sacred Valley while supporting local livelihoods through responsible tourism.
Journey to the Highlands of Lamay
Our day begins in Lamay, where we meet and prepare for the journey before driving to the Sapacto sector, a highland community located above the village. This transfer allows us to access the most scenic and remote sections of the route, avoiding crowded paths and maximizing time in the mountains.
As we ascend, the landscape opens into wide Andean plains, dotted with small farming settlements, native grasses, and stone corrals used by local shepherds. From the start, the sense of space and silence sets the tone for a meaningful Andean experience.
Beginning the Hike
From Sapacto, we begin our hike along ancient highland trails traditionally used by local communities to move between valleys. The route unfolds gently, making it accessible for travelers with a moderate level of fitness while still offering a rewarding sense of adventure.
Along the way, our guide will share insights into local agricultural practices, seasonal cycles, and the relationship between Andean communities and their environment. These paths are not only scenic routes but also living corridors that continue to connect families, farmlands, and traditions.
High-Andean Landscapes and Biodiversity
One of the highlights of this hike is the constant change in scenery. We walk through potato fields, wetlands, and high-altitude grasslands, home to native flora and fauna. Herds of alpacas and llamas are commonly seen grazing nearby, while native and migratory birds accompany us along the trail.
As we move forward, the views expand toward the surrounding Apus, or sacred mountains, including Pitusiray, Sahuasiray, and Chicon. These peaks hold deep spiritual meaning in Andean cosmology and remain powerful symbols of protection and balance for local communities.
Connection with Local Life
Throughout the hike, we encounter shepherds and farmers going about their daily routines, offering a glimpse into the living culture of the Sacred Valley beyond the main tourist routes. These interactions, though simple, reflect the authenticity of the experience and the continued use of these ancestral paths.
By choosing this route, travelers actively contribute to the local economy, helping sustain traditional ways of life while promoting low-impact tourism in fragile mountain ecosystems.
Approaching Pisac
As we approach Pisac, the landscape begins to shift once again. The wide highlands gradually give way to terraced hillsides and cultivated fields that signal our descent into one of the most iconic areas of the Sacred Valley.
From elevated viewpoints, we enjoy sweeping vistas over the Pisac Valley, where agricultural terraces cascade down the mountainsides in a stunning display of Inca engineering. These terraces, still partially in use today, demonstrate the deep connection between ancient knowledge and present-day farming.
Descent Toward the Valley
The final section of the hike takes us downhill toward Pisac, following trails that link highland communities with the valley floor. This descent allows us to fully appreciate the dramatic geography of the Sacred Valley and understand why this region was so central to Inca civilization.
Our hike concludes near Pisac, where transportation will be waiting to take us back to our hotel or onward to our next destination.
